The Diplomat: Season 2 (2024)

American politics has become a funny affair in the world media. It is not only ridiculous to see the clowns competing with each other, it is disheartening to see the plight of most people on Earth lies with them. Politics aside, the plot of The Diplomat season 2 stems from the current instability in US politics. In case you’re wondering why Kamala Harris didn’t win the election and why she was pitched as an alternative to Biden, then you should definitely give this series a try. Indeed, there was only one way for Kamala to assume the top post as rightly pointed out by Deborah Cahn in the final episode of season 2.

For starters, the existential crisis of the US is evident. They constantly need to churn out world issues to maintain their upper hand in geopolitics. While this sometimes backfires, it is still the most crucial angle and basis for the foreign policy dictated by the US. The world needs evil in order to fight and maintain the status quo. It could be sometimes China but they depend too much on them or Iran that they couldn’t fight. Russia seems to be always the perfect choice even in their Hollywood crap storylines.

The season 2 plot too justifies that Russians can take a hit without repercussions as and when needed. The self sabotaging aspect of the west is critical and crucial to understand if you’re interested in geopolitics. If you go by The Guardian report, Putin himself showed interest in joining the NATO alliance. It’s another story that this was ignored conveniently and rather Kosovo was created by Bill Clinton to give the world another diversion. The entire premise of NATO’s existence is targeted to provide security to other smaller countries from Russia and so you could understand their doldrum in killing the concept of evil.

Deborah Cahn chose a plot that signifies the positioning of the foreign policy of the US in a way deemed appropriate. The entire fuss about who killed those 43 British Navy soldiers boils down to only one true evil. We all know that these things can’t be discussed openly in public but the attempts that cinema takes to highlight is still commendable. They always have the luxury to conceal and project in a way that will not offend the most of our ignorant ones and the political class in general.

And, it is crucial to finish the storyline in season 3 because by then we would see newer developments in US politics. But, if I have to project, I feel that the character of Grace Penn played by Allison Janney will explore the side of what Kamala would have done if she were to take the top post. A little shift towards the left leaning ideology of Democrats would do wonders for the show.
